Dubai Police is introducing ‘silent radars’ in residential neighborhoods, designed to monitor more than just speeding violations. These radars are called ‘silent’ because they operate without the traditional flash, aiming to encourage safe driving practices such as wearing seatbelts and avoiding mobile phone use while driving, according to a senior official.
Some residents tend to use mobile phones or neglect seatbelts for short trips within their communities, but traffic laws apply even in residential areas. Failing to fasten a seatbelt can result in a fine of Dh400 and 4 black points, while using a hand-held phone while driving incurs a fine of Dh800 and 4 black points.
The exact timeline for the installation of these silent radars has not been disclosed. The authorities have assured that all behavioral fines are thoroughly reviewed before being issued. Salma Mohammed Rashed Almarri, head of the Traffic Awareness section, emphasized that Dubai Police officers double-check fines using video footage, especially for behavioral violations like holding phones and not wearing seatbelts.
Hassan Ali Taleb Alhamer from the Traffic Technology Department explained that Dubai’s radars are not limited to detecting speeding. They can also catch illegal U-turns and other traffic violations. The advanced traffic control technologies on the roads can detect mobile phone usage and seat belt violations, among others. These radars can monitor six main lanes and two side lanes on a highway, read license plates, and identify if they are obscured or hidden. They can even detect violations when a vehicle is partially obscured by another.
Officer Salma highlighted the importance of stopping completely at pedestrian intersections. Motorists must wait until pedestrians have crossed completely, with failure to do so resulting in a Dh500 fine.
Dubai’s roads are monitored by advanced radars and large screens inside the Dubai Police Command Control Centre. Major Mohammed Shahriyar Alblooshi, assistant director of the Command Control Centre, stated that they use cameras to check road conditions and send police patrols as needed. Captain Majid Al Qassim, head of specialized operations, added that they monitor all roads from the command centre, ready to dispatch patrols and ambulances in emergencies.
The Dubai Police Awareness Department has been educating drivers about maintaining a safe following distance, with fines of up to Dh400 for violations. The authority emphasizes that the goal of these systems is to enhance road safety, not just issue fines. While many drivers are aware of radar locations and slow down accordingly, the main focus is on maintaining consistent and safe driving speeds.
